Frank’s mixes

So, here’s this month’s mix. A bit too long for one CD but not quite as long as previous “epic” mixes - it was originally planned to be longer but I trimmed out a good few tunes (which might make it into a future mix) before recording it - this one’s got Disco, Boogie, Broken, House, old & new.

Here’s another long-ish mix with a range of different styles, starting off around 100bpm working up to over 120 bpm. There are one or two sketchy segues in there but I don’t think I’ll get a chance to re-record it over the next week or so so I thought I’d put it up as is.

Got quite a few different styles on this one, so I thought I’d give it the above title. I was going to do it a bit longer with about 8 more tracks but the last record skipped near the end and I thought I’d take the cue to just finish it off, seeing as it’s a reasonable enough length as it is. This makes a total of four mixes this month: had a bit of a backlog since December, I guess. I’ll be sure to do at least one for March but no promises for any more than that.

I thought I’d do a mix of uptempo Jazz Dance tunes, tempos ranging from 130bpm to over 150bpm, old and new(-ish) tracks. For 08. and 14. I’ve given the name of the artists who actually performed the track. In both cases they are nominal “remixes” (of Jazztronik and 4Hero respectively), but the tracks were performed and recorded from scratch.

I thought I’d try something different. This one is over twice as long as the usual mixes (which means it won’t fit on one cd - sorry). The idea was to try and get a lot of different types of stuff on it. Soul, Jazz, Funk, House, Broken, Latin, Afro-beat, Disco, Balearic. It’s a bit of an epic in more ways than one. I actually recorded (or thought I recorded) it on Monday night but the file didn’t save properly to my computer (had to happen for the really long mix, didn’t it) so after abandoning the third rescue attempt, I went ahead and re-recorded the whole thing last night in the same sequence, adding in one extra track (04.).

Here’s a new one for June. This is another diverse type mix with a bit of everything - new, old, Balearic, Brazilian, Jazz, Funk, House, Breakbeat & Broken and a range of tempos from about 105 to 140 bpm.

I’m going to be dj-ing at Discotonic in Dublin on May 27 (details here) and have been putting together some records I might like to play. This is the second of my Discotonic practice mixes and, even though it sags a little in the middle, I’m much happier with this one than the first one. I’m not sure if I’ll actually play many (or even any!) of these tunes at Discotonic but this is the type of stuff I’m thinking of playing: 06-05-11discotonicpractice.mp3. Here’s another one from the vault. The newer mixes are getting pushed off the page so please scroll down or click on the current mixes link in the sidebar, there’s plenty of good stuff down there. This is a mix I made around the time I used to do Domingo (with Conor Griffin) at the Spirit Store in Dundalk and features the sort of stuff I used to play there. The recording quality is mostly good but there’s a bit of clipping now and then. It was ripped from a 90 minute cassette, encoded at 192 kbps and is in two parts.

This is another one of my old favourite mixtapes. The tempo is mostly over 120bpm and there are a good few dancefloor tunes on it but it’s much more of a “headphones” mix rather than a party mix. It was ripped from a 90 minute cassette, encoded at 192 kbps and is in two parts.

This - 05-09-11MAWproductions.mp3 - is a mix I did last year for a friend who had liked the Nu Yorican Soul album but was otherwise unfamiliar with the work of ‘Little’ Louie Vega and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez. I thought I should immediately address this omission, particularly so as my two favourite Nu Yorican Soul tracks, The Nervous Track and Mind Fluid (included on this mix) didn’t appear on the most widely released version of this album. File is 71mb and was encoded at 128kbps, runtime is 1:17:32.
